4. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

Justin Fields and the Ohio State Buckeyes offense had been near unstoppable through their first four games of the year. However, the albatross of their early-season schedule was the fact that they had not played anyone of merit. That changed in Week 5, however, as they went on the road to face a Nebraska team that, despite some struggles, has talent and was highly motivated to pick up an upset win.

The Buckeyes had other plans and Fields was at the heart of it. The Georgia transfer continued to look impossible to contain on the night as he went 15-of-21 for 212 yards and three touchdowns and adding 72 yards rushing with another score. I’ve said for some time now that Fields needs to increase his yardage production and he does still. However, with 23 total touchdowns already, he can’t be held out of the top four of these Heisman rankings.

3. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

Perhaps the most unexpected 2019 Heisman Trophy candidate, Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers were off in Week 5 ahead of a home game against a frisky Utah State squad. The hope is that Burrow will come back and be just as good as he has been thus far with this new-look LSU offense because, not only will that have him in the running for the award, but it could have his team in title contention.

Through four games, including a win over vaunted Texas, Burrow has 1,520 yards passing with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions while completing an absurd 80.6 percent of his throws and adding a rushing score. He’s been immensely more productive and effective than most anyone could’ve predicted this year and it’s got him a spot in the top three.
