PGA DFS value and punt plays: Shriners Hospital for Children Open
Another week of PGA DFS is upon us and we move to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Shriners Open. If you’ve taken a look at the course breakdown, you’ve gotten clued into the type of golfers to target from the top tiers this week. In this article, as we’ve showcased in previous weeks, our goal is to set us up with the best possible outcome from the lower-priced guys in hopes of providing salary relief, while digging deep into stats for potential punt plays that might pay off in great fashion down the stretch.
We found that gem in Cameron Percy in last week’s article- if you drafted Percy you were rewarded with an insane 14X value as he was able to squeeze into the Top 10 at the Safeway Open. Using Key Stats from the course break down, I am targeting players with high spikes in Strokes Gained Approach within the appropriate proximity, Fairways Gained in the last 12-24 Rounds, and those who also have a history of comfort on bent-grass putting surfaces. Let’s dive in and look at some potential gems.
LANTO GRIFFIN
Lanto is the highest priced value play of the slate, and for good reason. Finishing 6th overall for the 2019 KFT Season, he has found himself in quite a groove during his pro debut so far. At TPC Old White he earned himself a T13, two weeks ago a T11 in Mississippi, and last week squeezing into a T17 over in Silverado.
This outstanding performance from the lefty has found him gaining +4.1 Strokes Gained total over his last 5 Events, +0.7 Strokes Gained Approach, but more importantly, +3.3 SG Putting. Griffin is famous as a great Poa Putter historically gaining +.20SG on that surface being California born and bred, but his numbers on bent-grass putting are only a fraction less than his Poa performances at +.13 SG putting. I like him to continue his hot streak of great form on a course that will play similar to the Safeway. ($8,600 FD – $7,200 DK)
ROB OPPENHEIM
Fan Favorite Rob Oppenheim found himself in the top 20 in the early rounds last week at the Safeway but ultimately fell victim to the swirling winds and just could not get anything going with the putter down the stretch. He finished at a disappointing T52 but doing so gaining +2.2 Strokes Tee to Green, and +0.5 SG Approach. What did him in was -2.7 Strokes on the Greens.
Looking at Oppenheim’s average Strokes Gained Putting on Bentgrass he gains +.386 on these types of surfaces vs a negative differential on -.12 SG Putting on Poa. Give him another shot this week and consider the putting surfaces he is more comfortable on, and greens that present a larger margin of error. I like him for a good showing ranked 18th in proximity from 100-125 yards among his fellow competitors. ($7,000 FD – $6,200 DK)
