Week 6 of the college football season is upon us and it’s time to make some money. Here are five underdogs you should bet on this weekend.
Most college football teams have played at least four games this season which gives bettors a pretty good idea what they can expect moving forward. That doesn’t mean that underdogs can’t pay off big. There are some interesting matchups this weekend and some favorites need to be on high alert.
This piece will focus on five games where teams getting at least seven points deserve your betting consideration. Any wager you make on the games below should come with the opportunity to win significantly more than you put down. Making these bets isn’t for the faint of heart, but they could earn you some serious cash this weekend. As always, our odds are provided by Oddsshark.com. Let’s start with an intriguing game in the ACC.
5. Virginia Tech +14 at Miami
Everyone knows Justin Fuente‘s seat is getting red-hot at Virginia Tech. Sometimes the best thing for a team under that sort of pressure is to hit the road. The Hokies will have a chance to focus on football as they head to Miami this weekend. The Hurricanes have been good this season, but the early loss to North Carolina is starting to look weaker and weaker as the season rolls along. There’s a reason they are double-digit favorites, but it’s a shaky line. Don’t be surprised if Virginia Tech goes back to basics and pulls out a narrow win with quality special teams and defensive play.
4. Vanderbilt +7 at Ole Miss
The Commodores got their first win of the season last week against Northern Illinois. That should give Vanderbilt a little bit of momentum as they head south to Oxford. For Ole Miss, this is a classic hangover game. They laid it all on the line last weekend against Alabama but were predictably crushed by the Crimson Tide. If they overlook Vanderbilt early it could allow the Commodores to gain a crucial early lead. The Rebels deserve to be favorites, but they cannot afford to overlook an SEC opponent.
3. Georgia Tech +10.5 vs. North Carolina
The aforementioned Tar Heels are reeling after a heartbreaking home defeat to Clemson last weekend. Suddenly, Mack Brown’s team has lost three games in a row after their 0-2 start. Traveling to Atlanta isn’t ideal for a team short on confidence. Georgia Tech certainly isn’t what anyone would consider a good football team, but they are going to play like a wounded animal on Saturday. The bet here is that Carolina spends a quarter or two feeling sorry for themselves and lets the Yellow Jackets gain some much-needed confidence. If that happens, Georgia Tech might be able to make enough plays in the passing game to hold on to a lead.
2. Rice +9.5 at UAB
Rice comes into this game with an ugly 0-5 record after dropping an overtime game to Louisiana Tech last weekend. The Owls are, however, 3-1-1 against the spread. That makes them a very dangerous visitor for UAB. If you judge the Blazers solely on their performances this season there’s very little to get excited about. Their only victories are over Akron. South Alabama and Alabama State. Their loss last weekend to Western Kentucky was their only legitimate game of the season. UAB will like their chances at home, but Rice is really going to push them. This could be the week where the Owls get their first victory.
1. Utah State +27.5 at LSU
Obviously, we’ve saved our biggest long shot for last here. Utah State thoroughly deserves to be heavy underdogs as they head to Baton Rouge. However, there are valid reasons to think this game could end up a lot closer than the oddsmakers believe. Firstly, this is 11 a.m. kickoff for LSU fans. That typically leads to a sleepy atmosphere at Tiger Stadium. Utah State quarterback Jordan Love will be primed and ready to take advantage of any slumber. He could end up as a first round pick in April’s draft. If he gets going early, the Aggies will try to ride him to their biggest win in school history. Don’t bet the farm here, but if you’re looking to make a play where you can win huge money on a modest bet, look no further.
