Wide Receivers to Sit

Odell Beckham Jr. (CLE) @ SF

It’s absolutely insane that I would have one of the league’s best receivers on this list, but his recent play has caused me to consider placing him here. It’s sort of a gray area since Beckham is so talented and we are all aware of his ability to break open a game, but the first quarter of this season has not been the case for him in 2019. Aside from the Jets game where he caught six passes for 161 yards and a touchdown, Beckham has come nowhere close to the vicinity of a top20 receiver in any of his three other individual games hes played. While the 49ers have surrendered the sixth-most receiving yards per catch to wide receivers this year (15.56), Beckham’s recent struggles haven’t instilled much confidence in me to believe he will overcome this feat.

A.J. Brown (TEN) vs. BUF

I know some of you folks probably feel compelled to start A.J. Brown after his monster performance against the Falcons on Sunday, but I’m not totally convinced yet. I must admit, that I am impressed with how well Brown did as he caught three passes for 94 yards and a couple of touchdowns. The problem is his quality in a quarterback and the number of targets he’s receiving each game. Even though he played well on Sunday, he was only targeted three times by Mariota. It was an all or nothing type of situation for Brown. Had he not been as successful as he was, I feel even more people would be less inclined to pick him up on the waiver wire this week. We also saw a similar situation earlier this year when Brown had 100 yards in his rookie debut game against the Browns. The following two weeks, Brown was completely inefficient catching a combined four catches on ten targets for 29 yards and no scores. I would avoid A.J. Brown unless he can produce with more consistency and efficiency. Not to mention they are playing against Buffalo who are one of the best at shutting down wideouts this year (15.8 fantasy points/gm).

Terry McLaurin (WSH) vs. NE

As much as I am a firm believer in Terry McLaurin, this week is one of those exceptions where I’m not. The Redskins are completely screwed up at the quarterback position and can’t make up their minds on who their starter will be. This is bad news already, but the fact that Washington will be hosting New England makes it even worse. The Patriots are the best defense in football right now, boasting 10 interceptions this year which is by far the most in the NFL. Opposing receivers have not had much success against their secondary this year, scoring the least amount of fantasy points per game (12.6). With chaos at the quarterback position and an almost impenetrable defense coming his way, McLaurin will be lucky to crack 30 receiving yards this week.
