1. Joe Girardi

Girardi has been consistent in his desire to manage again since being let go by the Yankees after the 2017 season. Though he may have his eye on the Cubs’ job in Joe Maddon’s wake, to the point of taking himself out of the running for two jobs a year ago, he is a candidate for any of the openings that are out there this side of Kansas City.

Girardi is of course plenty familiar with the pressure of the New York market, with a successful 10-year run in the Bronx as his resume of proof. He may be a little old school, as Yankees general manager Brian Cashman cited a lack of good relations with younger players as a reason to let him go two years ago. But the Mets need to add some credibility to the organization, and it’s safe to say some of the internal nonsense that has been prevalent (and gotten out through the media, for that matter) would be curbed with Girardi in the dugout.

The Mets will have to pay Callaway for next season after firing him. which may affect how much they’re willing to pony up for a new manager. Girardi’s asking price will be high, naturally, but that should not be the thing that keeps the Mets away if they want him.
