College football upset alert
AUSTIN, TX – SEPTEMBER 21: Sam Ehlinger #11 of the Texas Longhorns signals at the line of scrimmage against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the second quarter at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on September 21, 2019 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Tim Warner/Getty Images) /

3. Texas Longhorns

Rank: 11 | Opponent: West Virginia Mountaineers | Time: Saturday, Oct. 5, 3:30 p.m. ET

It’s certainly worth noting that the West Virginia Mountaineers have not been particularly impressive throughout the first four weeks of the college football season. Neal Brown’s beginning to his tenure has been a bit spotty with a win over James Madison, a blowout loss to Missouri, a solid win over NC State and a narrow victory over Les Miles and Kansas. They may be 3-1 but it’s not an eye-popping 3-1 by any means.

The simple truth of the matter, though, is that the Texas Longhorns have not been as head-turning as we’d hoped to start the 2019 campaign. Yes, they handled business against Louisiana Tech and Rice but losing to LSU in a shootout and then surviving a shootout against Oklahoma State two weeks ago before their idle week makes you wonder if Sam Ehlinger and Tom Herman’s team are actually the elite group we thought they’d be.

It’s easy to have faith in the Texas offense, especially against a West Virginia defense that gave up 24 points to Kansas and 38 points in the loss to Missouri. Ehlinger and his host of big-time playmakers should be able to come out and succeed but the defense of the Longhorns still gives me pause. Are they actually good enough to stop a Big 12 offense consistently?

The fact of the matter is I don’t definitively know the answer to that question, which is worrisome. On top of that, even if West Virginia is relatively mediocre, playing in Morgantown is never an easy task, which is what the Longhorns will have to do on Saturday. Thus, this could be a dicey upset special.
