2. Ohio State Buckeyes

Rank: 4: | Opponent: 25 Michigan State Spartans | Time: Saturday, Oct. 5, 7:30 p.m. ET

For my money, the Ohio State Buckeyes have been the most impressive team in college football through the first five weeks. With all due respect to Alabama, LSU and Oklahoma, the Buckeyes have displayed the most promise on both sides of the ball with consistency to this point. And, in truth, I don’t foresee any team in the Big Ten being able to upset them. Having said that, the Michigan State Spartans may have the best shot.

To be sure, Brian Lewerke and the Spartans aren’t going to match the Ohio State offense blow-for-blow on Saturday night in Columbus. While the Michigan State quarterback has performed well this year with over 1,300 yards passing, 10 touchdowns and only one interception, he can’t match the firepower that Justin Fields has around him, which is why the Buckeyes are averaging 21 more points per game than their Week 6 opponent.

Having said that, the Michigan State defense looks absolutely legitimate. While they may have allowed Indiana to put up 31 points last week, we can certainly call that the Spartans looking ahead to this matchup and still surviving. And the key part of this is that Ohio State has not yet faced an upper-tier defense to this point in the year, no matter how impressive they’ve been.

Everything has been smooth sailing for Fields, J.K. Dobbins and the Buckeyes when they have the ball this season. But that may not be the case against Kenny Willekes and Michigan State, who have the talent to slow them down. If Ohio State then gets out of sorts, things could at least potentially get interesting on Saturday night at The Shoe.
