Upset Alert: 5 college football teams in danger of losing in Week 6
1. Oregon Ducks
Rank: 13 | Opponent: California Golden Bears | Time: Saturday, Oct. 5, 8:00 p.m. ET
Entering last week, the Cal Golden Bears looked like potentially the favorites in the Pac-12, having an undefeated record and playing arguably the most impressive brand of football in the conference. And heading into a matchup against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene in Week 6, the stage was potentially set for a titanic contest that would’ve likely gone a long way in determining the regular-season conference champion.
Unfortunately, last week went disastrously for Cal. Not only did they drop their first game of the year, a Friday night contest against Arizona State, but they lost sophomore quarterback Chase Garbers due to injury. Garbers had made great strides from his suspect play in the 2018 season and was truly a catalyst for the Golden Bears offense, so losing him is a massive blow for this team.
While that rightfully makes Oregon the favorite, this is still not a game that Justin Herbert and the Ducks can take lightly. After blowing a lead and losing to Auburn in the season-opener, the Ducks have indeed been impressive to this point in the season, most recently beating Stanford. However, outside of their loss to the Tigers, they’ve not faced a defense the caliber of Cal’s.
Oregon is going on upset alert in Week 6, despite being 18-point favorites, because it’s a truly tough matchup for Herbert. The Golden Bears defense is experienced and littered with NFL-caliber talent. That will put the quarterback and offense to the test and, if the Ducks are overlooking them because of the Garbers injury, they could find themselves in trouble on Saturday night.
