The Kansas Jayhawks defense showed up big time on one series, as it forced the Oklahoma Sooners to punt, despite being at one time first and goal.

Regarding Kansas Jayhawks football, it has not been about winning for a very long time. But that might change now that the Mad Hatter and his grass chewing ways have made it to Lawrence this season. Les Miles’ team has already won two games this year and did something remarkable against the No. 6 team in the land.

Okay, the Oklahoma Sooners are going to win in Lawrence on Saturday. They have a Heisman Trophy hopeful at quarterback in Jalen Hurts, whose quarterback whisperer Lincoln Riley might be heading to the NFL sooner rather than later. But Miles had his first big moment of awesomeness at KU on Saturday. It was so breathtakingly glorious.

Not only did Kansas lead Oklahoma 7-0 at one point in this game, but the Jayhawks defense did not break on a first-and-goal opportunity. They broke the Sooners offense.

From first and goal to third and goal from the Jayhawks’ 48-yard-line, yes, that is momentarily great greatness. It’s the type of stuff that builds near .500 programs and maybe gets a team to a bowl one day. One step at a time, KU.

Even some of the best defenses this side of the Mississippi River wouldn’t be able to keep Riley’s Oklahoma offense from scoring points on a first and goal, much less than forcing the Sooners to punt.

Yes, Kansas is a basketball school, but you are not going to see anything greater the rest of the season in KU sports. Did it top Snoop Dogg’s arrival yesterday in Lawrence? Maybe not, but this was great!

The Mad Hatter will continue to nom on some grass to set the tone for his program. He will wear the whitest hats Adidas can give him a KU emblem on it to let everyone know he means business. Most importantly, he will bring some SEC-caliber defense to the pass-happy Air Raid Big 12.

The Big 12 doesn’t know what’s about to hit it. It’s no longer a foregone conclusion you’re getting to the end zone every single time in the 10-team Power 5 conference. Miles says you’re welcome.

No, offensive creativity has never been Miles’ forte, but with this display of defensive excellence, crisp, clean, white ballcaps off to you, good sir! You have to appreciate the little things like this, KU. It’s almost as good as winning Big 12 ball games, I can tell you that much. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
