After the Penn State Nittany Lions shut them out, the Maryland Terrapins celebrate their first touchdown versus the Rutgers Scarlet Knights with punches.

It’s hard to win football games when you don’t score. That was a major reason the Maryland Terrapins got housed 59-0 to the Big Ten East division rival Penn State Nittany Lions last week. But don’t think for a second Mike Locksley’s squad wasn’t going to find the end zone against the listless Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday afternoon.

After a 13-play opening drive for Rutgers that resulted in a missed field goal, Maryland would respond with a most glorious trip to pay dirt on the ensuing play. Quarterback Josh Jackson would connect with wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. on the Terrapins’ first offensive play from scrimmage for a sensational 80-yard touchdown strike.

Turns out, it wasn’t the only strike on that play. Demus was going to celebrate with his teammates, but tight end Tyler Mabry had other ideas. Given that it had been two weeks since Maryland scored a touchdown, Mabry probably forgot how to celebrate and punched Demus very hard in the arm, which resulted in a flag, because it was right in front of the official.

Mabry, that wasn’t a good idea? The Terrapins should throttle Rutgers in Piscataway on this college football Saturday. That being said, you don’t see Penn Staters, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans or Ohio State Buckeyes strike teammates with a closed fist when scoring a touchdown. Act like you’ve been in the end zone before, but I suppose it’s been a while.

Frankly, Demus was probably expected to get hit by somebody on that play. However, it wasn’t a Scarlet Knight, but a Terrapin! This is college football friendly fire. When keeping it real goes wrong. But whatever, Maryland will wipe the floor with Rutgers in the Scarlet Knights’ stadium. That’s how it goes for the Big Ten bottom feeder.

Even if that punch was excessive, it was part of a game that will help the Terrapins get halfway to bowl eligibility. Keep in mind before Locksley was named Maryland’s head coach this past offseason, he had won a total of three games as a head coach ever, two in two years and change at New Mexico State and one as the Maryland interim in 2015.

There are wins to be had on the Terrapins’ upcoming schedule. They should be able to win maybe seven or eight games this year. But when they celebrate bowl eligibility, let’s not punch each other. Bowl teams don’t do that, or they shouldn’t do that. Great touchdown though, by Demus.
