Tuesday’s humbling 2-2 draw with Belgian minnows Club Brugge means that Real Madrid have made their worst-ever start to a Champions League campaign. Head coach Zinedine Zidane lambasted his side’s defending, but with this being his fourth season at the club, he’s had more than enough time to rectify such problems.
The headlines haven’t been kind, with plenty of focus on the disappointing form of this summer’s marquee signing, Eden Hazard, and last summer’s marquee signing Thibaut Courtois. The latter doesn’t seem to represent any kind of improvement on the man he replaced, Keylor Navas.
Aside from that, the focus is already shifting to possible new arrivals such as Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen and Ajax’s Donny van de Beek, or whether Martin Odegaard, who’s been hugely impressive on loan at Real Sociedad this term, will make an early return to his parent club.
In contrast, Granada have been the revelation of this La Liga season and currently lie second, just a point behind today’s opponents. Their entirely deserved 2-0 win over Barcelona in late September means that Madrid won’t be taking them lightly.
