Let Rich Hill and Hyun-Jin Ryu walk in free agency

The Dodgers have two veteran starters heading into free agency this season, and while it’s an easy decision to let the often hurt Rich Hill walk, Ryu is coming off an incredible 2019 season.

The 32-year-old Ryu threw for 182.2 innings in 29 starts this season, both career-highs for Ryu, while posting a 2.32 ERA on the year. But at age 32 and a free agent market looking light on front-end starting pitching, Ryu could command more money than the Dodgers would be willing to spend.

If the 39-year-old Hill wants to come back to Los Angeles on a discount that could make him worth keeping around, but he’s only been able to throw over 100 innings twice during his time with the Dodgers. Hill was limited to just 58.2 innings this year, while still sporting an impressive 2.45 ERA and 11 K/9, Hill shouldn’t be considered anything more than a depth starter at this point in his career.

Plus with pitchers like Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, and Julio Urias already on the big-league roster and having success in 2019, the Dodgers could save themselves some money and apply that elsewhere.
