Fantasy Football 2019 Week 6: Diggs Shines, Allen Keeps on Winning
By Bill Pivetz
We saw some interesting performances and scoring for fantasy football in week 6. What does this mean as we get ready for week 7?
Week 6 was an interesting one for real and fantasy football. It started with the Patriots defense dominating an injury-riddled Giants team on Thursday and finished (not counting Monday) with the Steelers shutting down the Chargers.
With most of the backup quarterbacks still leading their teams to wins, players returning to form and other struggling, fantasy owners are getting anxious with their teams with the playoffs just a few weeks away. I wrote a piece regarding trades earlier in the week and continue to write weekly waiver wire pieces to help owners make moves leading to their success.
This piece is going to focus on some of the major story-lines coming out of week 6 and how it affects fantasy football and owners going forward. Whether it’s a breakout performance like we saw with Will Fuller last week or a complete offense shut down, fantasy owners have decisions to make.

While people involved with real football decisions couldn’t care less about fantasy football, their decisions do have an impact on the game in some way. Here are the major notes coming out of week 6.
Stefon Diggs Returns to Glory
After not being heavily involved in the offense to start the season and rumors of a trade, Diggs exploded in week 6 against the Eagles. He caught seven of his 11 targets for 167 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles secondary is their Achilles heel and the Kirk Cousins took advantage of that.
In my previous article, I told owners to buy low on Diggs, saying that his production will improve with the Vikings’ upcoming match-ups.
It may be a bit too late to buy low but I would still trade him for him. If you are a Diggs owner, either keep or raise the asking price. This is the Diggs fantasy owners drafted in the sixth round.
Panthers Quarterback Decision
When Cam Newton missed his first game with an injury, many were skeptics of Kyle Allen‘s skills. He shut them up really quickly with 261 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. In his four starts, Allen has 901 yards, 65.6 completion percentage, seven scores and zero picks.
The Panthers offense looks good with him under center. He, obviously, doesn’t make many mistakes. Allen spreads the ball around, five players had at least three targets, and Christian McCaffrey is still the focal point.
The Panthers have a bye in week 7 and Newton is expected to miss the next game before getting back on the field. I know Newton is the face of the franchise, but if Allen wins again in week 8, how can they make the switch? The team performs better with Allen and fantasy owners are enjoying the boost to the skill players. It will be a tough decision, one I’m happy I don’t have to make.
Patrick Mahomes Is Fine
Also in my latest article, I told Mahomes fantasy owners to sit tight after his last two games. I was right. Mahomes was happy to see Tyreek Hill back on the field as he completed 19 fo 35 passes for 273 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
The Chiefs schedule gets a little tougher with the Broncos, Packers and Vikings next on the slate. Though, with Hill, Travis Kelce, LeSean McCoy, Damien Williams, Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman, Mahomes will have plenty of options to pick opposing defenses apart.
Mahomes is back on track and will be the best fantasy quarterback for the rest of the season.
Other Notes
The Cowboys and Jaguars offenses struggle in week 6. Dallas was missing Amari Cooper for most of the game and the rest of the pass-catchers dropped almost every pass thrown their way.
The Jags could not move the ball as they put up just six points. Maybe they can get things right with games against the Bengals, Jets and Texans coming up.
Jump ship on the Titans. The switch from Marcus Mariota to Ryan Tannehill was not injury-related. Maybe Derrick Henry still has some value but I don’t want to own any of the skill players.
Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman are a two-headed monster in the 49ers backfield and both will be viable fantasy assets going forward.
The Panthers, Browns, Steelers and Buccaneers are on bye in week 7. That along with the notes I mentioned will lead to some big moves on the waiver wire. I’ve seen it before but don’t make any rash decisions. Assess your team’s needs and see how you can improve without throwing everyone away.
