AEW Dynamite recap for October 16, 2019: Rise of the Painmaker

AEW Wednesday Night Dynamite this week featured five incredible matches and the first defense of the two major AEW Championships.

Dynamite starts off quickly with a first-round match of the tag team title tournament featuring SCU facing off against Best Friends.
Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian looked to be the two men representing SCU but Daniels was attacked and piledriven onto the stage by The Lucha Bros. Scorpio Sky came out, saved Kazarian from suffering the same fate, and ended up taking Daniels’ place in the match.
Kazarian and Chuck Taylor start off the match but Kazarian is suffering some nagging injuries from the Lucha Bros’ attack and The Best Friends take advantage of that. Sky saves Kazarian from the beatdown and loses one of his shoes for his trouble. The fight spills to the outside as both teams jockey for position.
All four men find their way up to the top rope and Best Friends hit a massive Electric Chair Superplex. Sky sways the tide back for SCU but Taylor looks to hit him with a tope and ends up missing and hitting Trent. Kazarian and Sky hit dives to the outside and Sky gets so amped up he throws his other shoe into the crowd. SCU isolate Trent and hit an assisted Tornado DDT.
Kazarian runs wild but his back seems to still be bothering him. Taylor tags in and pulls the momentum back towards Best Friends and hugs Trent to cap off the sequence. Best Friends hit a Doomsday Device Knee on Kazarian. Trent goes for a piledriver on the apron but Kazarian back body drops him onto the apron instead. Kazarian slides the prone Trent back into the ring and hits a powerbomb dropkick combo move with Scorpio to finally get the three count.
This was a solid match that got the crowd super hot to start off the show. Best Friends being eliminated in the first round is surprising but SCU is a heavy favorite to win the whole tournament. Lucha Bros getting involved in this match may hint that we are heading towards a SCU vs Lucha Bros tournament final.
