Who is Patrick Mahomes’ backup for the Chiefs?
With a knee injury knocking him of Thursday night’s game, and perhaps longer, who is Patrick Mahomes’ backup?
Patrick Mahomes has been hampered by an ankle injury in recent weeks, but on Thursday night against the Denver Broncos it got worse. On a quarterback sneak for a first down, the 2018 NFL MVP suffered a right knee injury and was immediately ruled out for the rest of the game.
So who is Mahomes’ backup?
Matt Moore signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in August, after backup quarterback Chad Henne was placed on IR with an ankle injury. He was out of the league in 2018, but spent the seven seasons prior to that with the Miami Dolphins. He started 17 regular season games for Miami, including the final three of the 2016 and a Wild Card Round playoff loss after Ryan Tannehill was lost to a knee injury. Moore started his career with the Carolina Panthers, with 13 starts over the 2007, 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Mahomes’ injury outlook is unclear, but it’s quite possible he misses multiple games. An addition on the trade or free agent avenues seems pretty likely for the Chiefs if that’s the case, but for at least the rest of Thursday night’s game it’ll be Moore.
