Texas-Kansas was the game of the year no one saw thanks to The Longhorn Network

The Texas Longhorns survived the Kansas Jayhawks in what was a truly great game. Too bad no one could see it because it was on The Longhorn Network.

You never know when greatness will happen on a college football gridiron. When the No. 15 Texas Longhorns hosted the lowly Kansas Jayhawks in a Big 12 matchup in Austin on Saturday night, you probably thought that the Longhorns would win this one easily.

While they did end up winning on a last-second field goal by Cameron Dicker the Kicker, nobody actually watched this game. The reason for this absurd lack of eyeballs on what might very well be the greatest game of the college football season thus far is because it was on The Longhorn Network…

Texas defeated Kansas, 50-48. No, this was not a low-scoring basketball game. Instead, it was an amazing aerial assault of awesomeness at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. It went back and forth all night with both teams taking leads throughout. The quarterback play in this game was outstanding. Kansas’ Carter Stanley went toe-to-toe with Texas’ Sam Ehlinger all evening.

At one point, Kansas was about to tie the game up at 31 with a point after attempt. Instead, it was blocked by Texas and returned 98 yards for two points for the Longhorns. Texas led Kansas 33-30 with a little over 10 minutes left in the ball game. Both teams would score two more touchdowns apiece before the end of regulation. It only got weirder as the game went on. That’s for sure.

Kansas would add another field goal to offset the three-point swing on the blocked PAT that was returned for two points by Texas. The Jayhawks would attempt a 2-point conversion down 47-46 with about a minute and change left. Stanley and the Jayhawks offense would convert the 2-point try, leaving very little time for Ehlinger to get his team into field goal range for the victory.

Fate would have it that the Austin native would drive his team down the field to set up a 33-yard game-winning attempt for Dicker. He capped off the brilliant 10-play drive for Texas by sticking it right through the uprights to win the game over Texas to stay ranked. A third loss on the season would have ended any sliver of hope that the Longhorns could make it back to the Big 12 title.

This was a thrilling game with both quarterbacks throwing for four touchdowns, as well as getting great play out of the running backs. Both teams got two trips to pay dirt on the ground as well. Simply put, this game had everything. Correction: it was missing one thing and that was being on a channel that people outside of Texas have on their cable package. It was a great game, though.
