Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw two picks in the first half versus the Louisville Cardinals. What’s going on with him?
The Clemson Tigers are undefeated, but there are concerns to be had with this football team. If Clemson were to slip up at any point this regular season or in the ACC Conference Championship in Charlotte should the Tigers presumably get there, they may not make the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2014. And what’s going on with quarterback Trevor Lawrence?
Entering play on Saturday afternoon against the division rival Louisville Cardinals, Lawrence had thrown six interceptions on the year in as many games. The former five-star recruit from Cartersville, Georgia threw only four in 15 games last year as a true freshman for the national championship-winning program.
Well, he just two more interceptions in the first half of the Louisville game, a game that Clemson should be able to win easily. The Tigers are by far the best team in the weak ACC and Louisville is essentially rebuilding under first-year head coach Scott Satterfield, who had previously led the Appalachian State Mountaineers to great success.
Louisville picks off Clemson again. It's now eight INTs on 168 throws this season for Trevor Lawrence. Last season it was one INT/99 throws. This year, it's one INT/21 throws. https://t.co/HpLg8yW1p4

From the looks of it, Lawrence seems to be pressing a good bit. He’s trying to force throws, as illustrated by his second pick on the afternoon on a ball that was thrown into triple coverage. Lawrence’s decision-making has been questionable at best, as he now leads the ACC in interceptions with eight.
ESPN’s Jim Mora is saying that Lawrence isn’t seeing the field well and all and even begins to question if he’s even ready for the week. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said that Lawrence is fine physically, but the Tigers starting quarterback might be more banged up than Swinney is leading on.
Clemson did take a 17-3 lead into halftime on the road versus division-rival Louisville, but this is a game where the Tigers needed to assert their dominance to hopefully impress the voters that make up the AP Top 25 Poll. The Tigers have fallen from No. 1 to No. 3 in recent weeks with the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers jumping them in the rankings.
Truthfully, that doesn’t matter too much right now, as the College Football Playoff Selection Committee will give up the Top 25 that really matters in a few weeks. If Clemson keeps winning, then the Tigers will stay in the top four.
But should the Tigers lose, that might be all she wrote about the ACC making the Playoff for the sixth year in a row. The ACC is one of only two Power 5 conferences to get a team in all five postseason final fours to date, along with the SEC. Clemson is the ACC’s only realistic shot.
Lawrence must play better if the Tigers want to repeat as national champions, or even think about getting back to the national title bout. Clemson can be perfect through Charlotte, but whatever team the Tigers face in the national semifinal would be able to expose Lawrence if he continues to be this inherently reckless with the football.
