Atletico Madrid face Bayer Leverkusen at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
In the first of back-to-back Champions League games against each other, Atletico Madrid host Bayer Leverkusen at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Atletico are tied for first in Group D with four points. While Leverkusen are still looking to pick up their first points of the group stage.
Atletico have dropped to sixth in La Liga after draws in four of their past five games. In their last Champions League game, Atletico went to Moscow and beat Lokomotiv 2-0. Manager Diego Simeone’s defensive approach does not allow many scoring chances for opposing teams but it has come at a price.
Atletico have struggled to score goals this season. Scoring will be even more difficult for Atletico against Leverkusen as the Spanish side will be without their top playmaker Joao Felix, who is sidelined with an ankle injury. With Felix out, Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata will be counted on even more heavily than normal.
Leverkusen are ninth in the Bundesliga table after eight games. However, they are only two points back of first place in an incredibly tight Bundesliga table. In the Champions League, Peter Bosz’s team has gotten off to a terrible start. Leverkusen lost at home to Lokomotiv Moscow and then lost in Italy to Juventus. Another loss would likely doom Leverkusen’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Bosz will rely on the duo of Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz. Volland leads the club with five goals in all competitions, while Havertz is the creative force that makes everything happen when his side has the ball.
