Willie Taggart could get hit by a bus and FSU still wouldn’t hire Urban Meyer

Florida State Seminoles athletic director David Coburn said head football coach Willie Taggart could get hit by a bus and he wouldn’t hire Urban Meyer.

If you want to know how things are going down in Tallahassee with the Florida capital’s favorite football, look no further than what Florida State Seminoles athletic director David Coburn said to dispel rumors surrounding the university’s struggling football program under head coach Willie Taggart.

The most interesting rumor of the day surrounding Seminoles football is if Florida State were to part ways with Taggart, its top target would be former Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer. Meyer, who last coached with Ohio State a year ago, retired for the second time this decade for health reasons. He now is a part of FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff.

Meyer has been linked to several high-profile jobs, including the USC Trojans and the Dallas Cowboys. However, Coburn had no use for letting Meyer to Florida State rumors circulate any longer. His response was one for the ages.

“If [Willie Taggart] were hit by a bus tomorrow, we would not target [Urban] Meyer, period,” Coburn said. “I say that with all due respect to Coach Meyer, but we would not target Steve Spurrier either.”

Wow.

Okay, we all get it. No self-respecting Seminole would hire a former Gator head coach as the next leader of the football team, but didn’t he just equate Taggart to automotive roadkill?

How do you think that’s going to land with the Florida State head coach? At least he knows if any sort of bus runs him over he will not be replaced by Meyer or Spurrier or any other Gainesville legend. Good to know.

We get it. Florida State is a college football blue-blood. This program should win at least 10 games annually and contend for ACC Championships every season. The amount of talent in-state in Florida is outrageous. The same thing can be said of its rich football legacy has been created over the last several decades. You can’t tell the story of college football without Florida State.

Taggart boasts a bad 8-11 (5-8) record since coming to Tallahassee in 2018 to replace Jimbo Fisher. The Seminoles can afford only two more losses this season and they still have the archrival Gators on the slate at the end of the regular season in the Sunshine Showdown.

Coburn probably regrets what he said, as he verbally through Taggart under the bus by saying he could get hit by a bus and Florida State wouldn’t bring Meyer in to replace him. This is what inherent dysfunction in major college football looks like. Florida State fans should be embarrassed by what their athletic director had to say about Taggart. What a botch job of a statement that was.
