The Champions League returns on Wednesday for the third game of the group stage. In the biggest game of the day, Inter Milan host Borussia Dortmund at the San Siro. The two European heavyweights are joined in Group F with Barcelona and Slavia Prague. Dortmund and Barcelona are tied for first in the group with four points, while Inter and Prague are tied with one point.
Inter have been great this season in Serie A but have struggled in the Champions League. In eight Serie A games, Inter have lost only once, to Juventus, and sit one point behind the defending Italian champions. In the Champions League, Inter opened with a disappointing draw against Prague and lost to Barcelona 2-1 in their second game. Over the weekend, Inter defeated Sassuolo 4-3 behind braces from Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez. Lukaku and Martinez each have five goals this season and will look to continue their hot streak on Wednesday.
Dortmund are fourth in the Bundesliga with 15 points in eight games. After a scoreless draw against Barcelona, Dortmund went to Prague and beat Slavia 2-0. Manager Lucien Favre might be forced to make significant changes to his lineup on Wednesday. Dortmund could be without their top two scorers, Paco Alcacer and Marco Reus. It would be a major blow if one of the players misses the game against Inter.
If both are unable to play, Dortmund will be in serious trouble. Dortmund do not have a natural backup for Alcacer. When the Spanish striker has missed games before, Favre has inserted Reus in his place. If both players miss the game, Favre will likely start Mario Gotze at striker and move winger Julian Brandt inside to replace Reus.
