Justin Fields gave Ohio State football fans a brief scare when he went to the medical tent with a back injury. It’s the one thing that can stop this unstoppable Buckeyes squad.

Ohio State has been unstoppable this year with Justin Fields and J.K. Dobbins running the offensive show while Chase Young and an NFL-ready secondary dominate on defense. The Buckeyes have no weaknesses and appear to be the most complete team in the nation, despite their No. 3 national ranking. However, the one thing that can stop Ohio State gave Buckeyes fans a moment of pause in the second half of the win vs. Wisconsin.

If Justin Fields gets injured, the Buckeyes are in trouble.

Really going out on a limb to suggest a team losing their Heisman candidate at quarterback would hurt the team. But when Fields was taken to the injury tent after a rushing touchdown in the third quarter when he landed hard on his back. Hurts was in the tent momentarily as Buckeye fans had their national title dreams flash before their eyes.

Just as quickly as Fields can hit the corner and take it to the distance, Fields was out of the tent and trying to get loose in the cold, wet weather in Columbus. Fields was dealing with a lower back injury according to the FOX broadcast. On the ensuing possession, Fields showed off a slick spin move to pick up a first down when he was slow to get up. He was clearly favoring the back injury he’s dealing with. It would appear it’s not a serious injury that prevented him from returning to play but back injuries can linger and they can get progressively worse.

I’m not signaling the alarm bells for Ohio State fans, but the depth behind Fields isn’t there. Sure, that can be said if Alabama lost Tua Tagovailoa, LSU lost Joe Burrow, Oklahoma lost Jalen Hurts or if Clemson was without Trevor Lawrence.

Ohio State has a nasty defense led by Chase Young who should be a Heisman Trophy contender despite, you know, being the best defensive player in the nation. The secondary will see every starter play in the NFL and Dobbins is playing his way into the Heisman conversation as well. Add that all up and Ryan Day has a great opportunity to coach his way into the College Football Playoff in his first year as the Buckeyes head coach.

It’s hard to project too far in the future, especially in college football where so much can change by the week, or by the quarter, but as long as Fields stays healthy, Ohio State will have a chance to play for their first national championship since 2015.
