Texas Tech just had the ugliest, most heartbreaking loss vs. Kansas
By John Buhler
The Texas Tech Red Raiders just one-upped the Los Angeles Chargers for the worst way to lose this year. They block a field goal, fumble it and lose anyway.
When you’re the Texas Tech Red Raiders, you find new and creative ways to give up points and lose in heartbreaking fashion in the Big 12. If giving up 90-yard touchdowns thanks to a pillow fight defense isn’t your cup of tea, just see what the Red Raiders did this time. This has to be the worst way a team can lose besides getting Kick-Sixed on the road vs. a rival team.
So it’s all tied up at 34 points apiece with 13 seconds left in the ball game between Texas Tech and the Kansas Jayhawks. The home team, Kansas, attempts what would be a game-winning 40-yard field goal. Liam Jones would have his 3-point try blocked defensive lineman Nick McCann.
Rather than gather the blocked kick, fall down and force overtime, Texas Tech defensive back Douglas Coleman III decided to get a little cute with the football in his hands. Well, he fumbled the ball with enough time for Kansas offensive lineman Kevin Feder to fall on it and recover it with two seconds left.
This set up what was a second game-winning field-goal attempt from Jones, this time from only 32 yards out. Jones nailed it to give the Jayhawks a 37-34 victory to improve to 3-5 (1-4) on the year and give head coach Les Miles his first Big 12 victory at Kansas. This was Miles’ first Big 12 regular-season victory since he was the Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach back in 2004.
Expect the fine folks in Lawrence to be celebrating this win most triumphantly. Kansas isn’t quite back to making bowl games, but the Jayhawks can now win Big 12 football games. They should have beaten the Texas Longhorns in Austin last week because we all know that Texas isn’t back and is completely overrated.
This is a win that can propel the Jayhawks the rest of the way into being something respectable. As for the Red Raiders, you did the equivalent of what the Los Angeles Chargers did in Nashville last Sunday evening. They had it won over the Tennessee Titans on the road, but they fumbled the ball at the worst possible second to lose in a way that can only shatter your soul into fragments.
