Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence silences critics in best game of the year
By John Buhler
Trevor Lawrence just gave us his best game of the year, as his Clemson football team demolished the Boston College Eagles in Death Valley on Saturday night.
The Clemson Tigers stay perfect by manhandling their ACC Atlantic foe in the Boston College Eagles on Saturday night. Clemson improves to 8-0 (6-0) on the season, as the Tigers inch ever closer to yet another ACC Championship. While a blowout of Boston College isn’t huge news, what is was the great play of sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Lawrence had led the Tigers to a national title in his freshman season a year ago. While immensely talented and arguably the best quarterback prospect of his generation, Lawrence hadn’t been playing up to the Heisman Trophy hype during his second season at Clemson. He had thrown head-scratching interceptions and not seeming fully engaged in previous contests.
However, he finally put together a completely dominating performance through the air without any mistakes. Lawrence completed 16-of-19 passes for 275 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He averaged a remarkable 14.5 yards per passing attempt during the ballgame, as well as carrying the rock eight times for 42 yards.
Eventually, Lawrence would be pulled for his backup Chase Brice once the game had been clearly decided in Clemson’s favor. Wiping the floor with Boston College in Death Valley seemed probable entering Saturday night, but to see a game that didn’t give us a pass or two of nonsensical quarterbacking has to have the Clemson Family feeling even better about its star quarterback.
Of course, it wasn’t just Lawrence on offense on Saturday night. He got a big boost from running back Travis Etienne, who had 16 carries for 109 yards and three touchdowns, as well as three catches out of the backfield for 33 yards. Wide receiver Diondre Overton led the way in the receiving game, as he had three catches for 119 yards, all of which went for touchdowns.
Holding the Boston College offense to only seven points is another example of this Brent Venables defense rounding into championship form, despite losing a ton of talent along the defensive line to the 2019 NFL Draft last spring. The Tigers won’t be tested until they reach the College Football Playoff, but don’t look be losing a ballgame before the calendar flips to 2020 by any means.
With more high-profile games on the slate this weekend, Clemson’s bludgeoning of Boston College will get overlooked. What shouldn’t is Lawrence playing his best game of the season and getting right at the right time for Clemson to make another serious national title push in the coming weeks.
