Baker Mayfield has been a massive fantasy football disappointment
By John Buhler
Baker Mayfield is not only not helping the Cleveland Browns win this year, but he’s killing your fantasy football team. How disappointing…
If you want to win games, it’s usually important to have stellar quarterback play. Otherwise, you’ll have to lean on defense, special teams and a great running game. NFL teams can do that, but it’s close to impossible to win your fantasy league with mediocre quarterback play. No signal-caller has been a bigger disappointment in fantasy football this year than Baker Mayfield.
Mike Wright of The Fantasy Footballers would say on Wednesday the following about the sophomore slump the Browns’ first-round pick from a year ago finds himself in.

“Baker Mayfield has been by far the biggest disappointment for fantasy football quarterbacks,” said Wright. “He was drafted as the Quarterback 4, currently sitting at Quarterback [26], only one performance in the top 12. I’m on Team Baker, but I’m going to extend that. Baker Mayfield has been the biggest disappointment in the NFL, taking fantasy out of it.”
The truth hurts sometimes, but this is the truth. Mayfield has been an interception machine during his entire two-year stint in Cleveland. While the Browns were within a game of .500 a year ago, his inherent recklessness with the football in his hands has his team 2.5 games back of the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North race.
Given that the Pittsburgh Steelers are now on their third-string quarterback Devlin Hodges and the Cincinnati Bengals are going to win maybe two games this year, Cleveland and Mayfield should be taking complete advantage of a down year for the entire division and they simply are not.
Cleveland is coming off its bye week after letting one slip away in Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks. The Browns probably would want a do-over after how poorly Mayfield played in that game. It was there for the taking and the Browns botched that one up for another L in the loss column.
No, things aren’t going to be getting better for Mayfield and the Browns in Week 8. That’s because they’ll be playing the Evil Empire New England Patriots this week. New England is coached by former Browns head coach Bill Belichick, who absolutely hates Cleveland. The Patriots have the greatest quarterback of all time still playing for them in Tom Brady and an elite secondary.
It would be one of the biggest upsets of the year if Mayfield and the Browns hand Brady, Belichick and the Patriots their first loss of the season. Sadly, it’s not happening. Maybe Mayfield and the Browns right the ship in November, but they’re not beating New England on Sunday by any stretch of the imagination.
