The Bundesliga table is extremely tight after eight games. Only two points separate first from ninth place. On Saturday, Schalke host Borussia Dortmund in the Revierderby, one of the biggest rivalry games in Germany. Dortmund enter the game tied for third in the Bundesliga, one point ahead of Schalke.

The Royal Blues could have moved into first place last weekend had they beaten Hoffenheim. Instead, Schalke lost 2-0, ending a streak that saw the club pick up 13 points in their previous five games. New manager David Wagner has had a successful start to his tenure with the club. However, the Royal Blues continue to be the club where strikers disappear. Schalke have got virtually nothing from their strikers since Klaas-Jan Huntelaar left the club in 2017. The Royal Blues are still looking for their first goal from a striker this season.

Borussia Dortmund lost 2-0 to Inter Milan at the San Siro on Wednesday in the Champions League. Lucien Favre’s team were happy to pass the ball around in the attacking half but could not break down Inter’s strong defensive shell. With Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer both sidelined with injuries, Dortmund did not have a target in the middle of the field capable of beating defenders. Alcacer will miss Saturday’s game against Schalke. However, Dortmund might get Reus back in the lineup. If Reus returns, it would be a huge boost to their attack and allow them to play players in their natural positions.
