2019 NFL trade deadline: Which teams made the best deals?
By John Buhler
8. Quandre Diggs to the Seattle Seahawks from the Detroit Lions
Who knows what the Detroit Lions are doing, honestly? Detroit finds itself at .500 at 3-3-1 through its first seven games of 2019. Though not the worst team in its division, it’s becoming increasingly not likely that the Lions will be contending for a playoff berth this year in the deep NFC North.
On Oct. 22, the Lions traded reliable and popular safety Quandre Diggs to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2020 fifth-round pick and a 2021 seventh-round pick. Diggs had been the best player in the Detroit defensive backfield not named cornerback Darius Slay since 2017.
Getting two picks for him could be useful for the Lions, but the Seahawks got a good player that can maybe get them over the top in the deep NFC West. Seattle will be in a dogfight in the NFC West with the likes of the undefeated San Francisco 49ers and the defending conference champion Los Angeles Rams. Even the Arizona Cardinals are no slouch this season.
Diggs may be sorely missed in Detroit, but he’s the type of player that can make a serious impact in Pete Carroll’s Seattle secondary. Being able to line up in multiple spots in multiple coverage packages only increases the value of this trade for Seattle. It was a quality move for Seattle general manager John Schneider to use a pair of draft picks to make his team better right away.
