4. Detroit Lions

The Lions seem to have a budding star at running back in Kerryon Johnson, but for the second time in as many seasons a knee injury has ended his campaign early. The group of Ty Johnson, Tra Carson and J.D. McKissic are left to hold down the fort for the rest of the season, barring a trade for a running back (Rashaad Penny? Melvin Gordon?) on Tuesday.

Even if they make a deal for a running back, Detroit should be looking for further reinforcements come the offseason. They can take on Bell’s cap hit for next year, with $49.6 million in cap space right now, and add a significant weapon to what looks like a promising set of players around Matthew Stafford.

Head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn may be feeling some heat looking toward next year in Detroit. In what promises to continue to be a competitive NFC North, a big offseason move or two shouldn’t be ruled out. Getting Bell would be a clear win-now move, as he’ll be a 28-year old running back next year, but the Lions may sneakily be in win-now mode and mortgage a bit of future to bring him in.
