Cam Newton’s return based on his health, not Kyle Allen’s performance

Kyle Allen will start against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. This means Cam Newton’s return is based on his health and not the play of Carolina’s backup.

Despite getting completely embarrassed last week vs. the San Francisco 49ers, the Carolina Panthers are going to roll with backup quarterback Kyle Allen for yet another week while starter Cam Newton continues his recovery from injury. The Panthers will be playing at home in Week 9 against a team that has struggled offensively all year in the Tennessee Titans. They’ll be alright.

But for those wondering what it’s going to take Newton to get back under center for Carolina before things go further south with Allen at quarterback, no need to worry, Panthers fans. The Fantasy Footballers give an explanation for why it’s a good thing Allen is starting yet again for the Panthers with Newton still on the mend.

“I love this because he had such a bad game,” said Jason Moore. “So the narrative is, ‘okay, we can go back to Cam because he had a bad game’. But the [Panthers] aren’t going back to Cam because Cam’s not 100 percent. And what that says to me is when Cam comes back, it’s not going to be based on Kyle Allen’s performance, it’s going to be based on Cam Newton’s health.”

What this means is that once Newton is inserted back into the Panthers’ starting lineup, you can safely rely on him for your fantasy needs because he will be 100 percent healthy. Newton offers a ton of value in fantasy for his ability to throw the ball deep downfield for touches, as well as take it in himself in the red zone with his big frame. He’s not the runner he used to be, but he’s still good.

So as the season rolls along and Allen continues to start over Newton, it’s more likely that Newton will be available on the free-agent market in your fantasy league. Monitor Panthers news closely if you’re in dire need of a quarterbacking upgrade because once Newton is good to go, go get him and go get him fast.

By the time Newton is back to full strength, it’ll likely be close to playoff time in your fantasy league. With the Panthers vying for a playoff spot in the NFC this year, every game counts. If a healthy Newton guides the Panthers to the postseason with great play in late November and early December, he might be the key waiver-wire addition to help you win your fantasy league.
