3. Earl Campbell

For a majority of today’s college football fans, Earl Campbell exists only in highlight reels like the one above. He is a legend in the game, and after watching these highlights, it is well deserved. Explosive power, speed, Campbell had it all.

The concept of gang tackling looks like it was invented for Earl Campbell. There is a part of this clip where Campbell shakes of two tacklers at the line of scrimmage, then goes on to the second level where he hits a tackler so hard in the ribs that the guy looks like he loses control of his arm. It shoots up in the air like Kermit the Frog’s arms. It should be that funny, but it really is. Imagine getting hit so hard, your arm just gives up. And then having to try to tackle him the next play.

When you have linebackers that cannot tackle you by themselves, it’s a next-level kind of power. Bone-crushing, jaw-rattling hits that usually are reserved for defensive players laying out the offense. Terror. Pure, unadulterated terror, must have gone through defenses when preparing for Earl Campbell. Sheesh.
