Robert Saleh

By the time the 2019 NFL season ends, Robert Saleh could be the hottest name on the head coaching market, especially since defensive coordinators are widely seen as the least risky hires. That didn’t necessarily work out well for the Jets when they tabbed Todd Bowles to be their next head coach, but Saleh is having more success than Bowles ever did as a coordinator.

While Saleh does benefit from coaching young studs on the defensive line like DeForest Buckner and Nick Bosa, he deserves plenty of credit for getting the most out of a deep stable of pass rushing talent. Saleh maximizes the strengths of his players and knows how to rotate everyone effectively, which can be a daunting task for others.

He’s also been effective at coaching players in the secondary, working with several talented-but-inconsistent defensive backs around veteran star Richard Sherman, who is essentially Saleh’s coach on the field.

The 49ers are undefeated with the league’s second-best defense behind New England, and Saleh is the breakout coaching star who deserves plenty of credit for his team’s success. Clearly, the Jets could benefit greatly from having a defensive genius like Saleh.

Mike McCarthy

The former Green Bay Packers coach was linked to several jobs last year, including, like Lincoln Riley, the Cleveland Browns. But McCarthy decided to take a break from coaching, which was likely the wisest decision for him. He had plenty of success in Green Bay, including a Super Bowl victory early in his tenure, but stagnation and squabbles with Aaron Rodgers doomed him in the end.

McCarthy would be a far less exciting hire than either Robert Saleh or Riley, but he’d be the most proven option available. After all, there aren’t many Super Bowl-winning coaches available on the market, and perhaps McCarthy would be back to his best in a new environment. He was in Green Bay for a long time, and it’s not always ideal for a coach to stay at the same place.

Plus, McCarthy won’t have to deal with a headstrong Hall of Fame quarterback in New York. Instead, he’ll get to bring some calm to the organization and help mold Darnold into the next superstar quarterback.
