Hugh Freeze exits Ole Miss, Rebels hammered by NCAA
Hugh Freeze’s time in Oxford, Mississippi was odd. The Rebels were arguably the worst program in the Southeastern Conference when Freeze arrived. In his first season, he took the Rebels to a bowl game. In his fourth season, Ole Miss was in New Orleans celebrating a Sugar Bowl victory. And then he lasted one more season in Oxford before he was out.
The Rebels were under scrutiny from the NCAA as Freeze was leaving, and then ultimately hit with a variety of penalties for violating NCAA regulations. But it wasn’t the NCAA that ultimately ended Freeze’s time leading the Rebels.
It was the fact that he was calling escort services with a phone provided by the University of Mississippi. Freeze reportedly called escort services at least 12 times. Not once. Not twice. At least 12 times, according to ESPN’s report.
Freeze left the Rebels. Ole Miss vacated 33 wins from his time in Oxford. SB Nation’s Steven Godfrey put out a phenomenal documentary on the subject matter (and how it relates back to the Egg Bowl and the NCAA).
Freeze’s time in Oxford, Mississippi was odd. The man was successful on the field to the point of beating Alabama in back-to-back seasons, but all of that came crumbling down due to scandals.
Now he’s coaching at Liberty from a hospital bed and a dental chair.
