30 biggest college football scandals of all time
By Ethan Lee
Jerry Sandusky and Penn State
Most of the scandals on this list are simple and within the realm of sports alone. There’s been breaking of arguably arbitrary NCAA rules and regulations. But, this scandal had far worse implications than vacated wins or forced resignation or forfeited trophies.
Jerry Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator for the Penn State Nittany Lions under Joe Paterno, was accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. Sandusky was found guilty and convicted on 45 of 48 counts of sexual abuse.
Sandusky met all of the boys through a charity that he set up called “Second Mile,” which is a charity formed and founded supposedly to assist “at-risk youth.”
University police initially responded to a report of child sex abuse in 1998. According to PennLive.com’s report, then-Penn State head coach Joe Paterno was informed Sandusky had raped a child in a shower on campus in 2002.
Sandusky wasn’t arrested until 2011. He is serving 30-60 years in prison. Penn State filed paperwork to sue The Second Mile in 2017.
