2019 NFL power rankings, Week 10: Dolphins win, Patriots don’t
Recap: Back to the .500 mark after consecutive wins, Mike Vrabel’s squad headed to Charlotte to take on the very dangerous Panthers. Tennessee’s defense had its issues with the Carolina ground game and in particular running back Christian McCaffrey. The club would give up a total of 156 rushing yards and Dean Pees’ unit would surrender 370 total yards. Ryan Tannehill threw for 331 yards and one touchdown but was also picked off twice as the Titans turned over the football three times. Running back Derrick Henry had 99 total yards from scrimmage and scored the club’s two touchdowns. But Vrabel’s team never caught up after falling behind 17-0 in the second quarter.
Next Week: The Titans host the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time since 2013 looking to extend their current winning streak in this series. Including a 22-21 playoff win in 2017 at Arrowhead Stadium, Tennessee has prevailed in the last three meetings between the franchises dating back to ’14 – all of those victories at Kansas City.
Playoff hopes: The specter of inconsistency continues to haunt this team. But there was a little solace taken as the rival Houston Texans were the only team in the division to win on Sunday. The Titans are a team still struggling to play complimentary football. The mistakes on the offensive side of the ball continue regardless of the quarterback.
Recap: With already more regular-season losses than all of last season, the Chargers looked to get a little closer to the .500 mark as the team hosted the Green Bay Packers. Last Monday, the club dismissed offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and suddenly the Bolts rolled up 442 total yards and 26 points in besting the NFC North leaders. Running back Melvin Gordon totaled 20 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns as the Los Angeles came up with 159 yards rushing on 38 running plays. Quarterback Philip Rivers was sharp, hitting on 21 of his 28 throws for 294 yards. And Aaron Rodgers was sacked three times, equally split between Joey Bosa (1.5) and Melvin Ingram (1.5).
Next Week: The Chargers and Raiders renew their divisional rivalry on a Thursday night in the Bay Area. The Bolts look to continue their recent winning ways in this always-interesting AFC West series. Los Angeles has taken the last four meetings between the teams, this after Oakland had won the previous four encounters from 2015-16.
Playoff hopes: After consecutive victories over the Bears and Packers, the Bolts are suddenly one win away from getting back to the .500 mark. And that’s huge considering that the current AFC postseason picture is muddled – and that’s an understatement. The Chargers’ formula for success in the win over Green Bay bears repeating.
