On Tuesday, Lyon host Benfica at Groupama Stadium in the second straight game between the two clubs. In the first meeting, Benfica picked up their first victory of the tournament, winning 2-1.
Lyon’s decision to make a managerial change and hire Rudi Garcia has paid early dividends. Garcia took over a team that had fallen to 14th in the table. After picking up seven points in his first three games in charge, Lyon have climbed to 10th in the table. In their last game, Lyon defeated Toulouse 3-2, with Memphis Depay and Moussa Dembele scoring. Depay and Dembele will start in the front two for Garcia against Benfica. The duo has combined for 18 goals this season.
Benfica are first in the Portuguese league, picking up 27 of a possible 30 points. However, the club is trying to overcome a terrible start in the Champions League. The Eagles lost their first two games of the group stage. Benfica picked up their first win of the group stage, beating Lyon 2-1 behind goals from Pizzi and Rafa Silva. While Silva will miss the reverse fixture against Lyon, Pizzi will continue to play a key role for the Eagles. Pizzi is Benfica’s best playmaker and has scored 12 goals and assisted on four others.
