For the second straight Champions League game, Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid will play against each other. In the first game, Atletico Madrid won 1-0, moving into a tie for first in Group D with Juventus. The loss was Leverkusen’s third loss in as many games, making them one of two teams that have failed to pick up a point in their first three games.
Leverkusen’s poor Champions League form has carried over into the Bundesliga. Peter Bosz’s team has not won a game since Sept. 28, picking up only two points in their last four Bundesliga games. Leverkusen has dropped points because they have struggled to defend, allowing an average of 1.46 goals per game. If Leverkusen have any hope of keeping their European campaign alive, they will have to defend better. Upfront, Bosz will turn to Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz, who have formed a strong pairing. Volland has six goals and three assists, while Kavertz has three goals and one assist.
Atletico Madrid are fourth in La Liga, chasing Barcelona and Real Madrid again this season. Finishing in the top four has become the norm for the club under manager Diego Simeone. The Argentine manager has transformed the club from a team that played in La Liga2 as recently as 2002 into a perennial La Liga title contender. Simeone installed a suffocating defensive style that prevents conceding goals but has come at the cost of limiting Atletico’s attack. The approach has helped Atletico win almost everything under Simeone except for the Champions League.
In the previous game against Leverkusen, Alvaro Morata came off the bench to score the winning goal. The Spanish striker leads the club with five goals this season, scoring his fifth of the season against Sevilla in Atletico 1-1 draw over the weekend. Morato will play a key role in Atleti’s attack as teenage prodigy Joao Felix is unlikely to play because of an ankle injury.
