Just 24 days after dislocating his kneecap during a game against the Denver Broncos, reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes seems poised to return for the Chiefs

According to the Kansas City Chiefs‘ first official injury report of the week, Patrick Mahomes was a full participant today, a strong indication that he’ll return to the starting lineup just 24 days after dislocating his kneecap.

Reports out of Arrowhead were that Mahomes lobbied head coach Andy Reid to allow him to return to the game that night, to which of course the answer was no.

Mahomes started practicing almost immediately after the injury, and seemed to quickly ramp up his participation in team activities over the course of the last two weeks. Speculation has been wild over the last two weeks, speculating on when he would return to the lineup.

Some suggested that Mahomes might return as early as the very next game, only 10 days removed from injury. Of course that was preposterous, but he had been seen running at practice, amongst other drills.

The speculation heated up after the loss to the Green Bay Packers. People wondered how long the Chiefs would wait and if it would be too late to salvage their playoff spot.

Despite that loss, and the Oakland Raiders winning games and keeping the division close, the Chiefs held Mahomes out again in Week 9 against the Minnesota Vikings. To the surprise of many, the Chiefs defeated the Vikings 26-23 under the direction of former high school football coach turned NFL starting quarterback Matt Moore, filling in for the defending NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

In light of that win, one may question why the Chiefs would decide to bring back their superstar signal caller with the lowly Titans on deck for Sunday’s matchup in Tennessee. It’s a fair question to raise, as the Chiefs play the paltry Chargers in Week 11 (on the notoriously bad field in Mexico City) and then have their bye week.

With a 2.5-game lead in the AFC West, and losing teams on deck for the next two weeks, it seems like Kansas City could have chosen to maximize rest for Mahomes, especially with a battered offensive line still missing starting left tackle Eric Fisher, who was once again listed as DNP (did not participate) in practice Wednesday. This means that a likely still sore/stiff franchise quarterback will take the field with human sieve Cameron Erving manning the most important offensive line position…a head-scratcher to say the least.

Regardless of what we think, it seems inevitable at this point, barring setback, that the most electrifying player in the NFL will return to action in Nashville on Sunday.
