Ducks fly together as Disney will be rebooting The Mighty Ducks as a television series for their upcoming streaming platform.

The Mighty Ducks are coming back after a 23-year absence. As reported by /Film on Wednesday, Disney is developing a Mighty Ducks television series that will be streaming on their platform, Disney+, upon completion.

Production and shooting of the series is set to begin in February 2020 and run until June in Vancouver.

The report from /Film laid out the first details of the new Mighty Ducks series, including how it will differentiate from the trio of movies from the 1990s. The series will follow a 13-year-old boy who is kicked off a junior Mighty Ducks team until his mother decides to start their own team, with players and a head coach and a rink to play in.

The television series seems to be a continuation of the world The Mighty Ducks started back in 1992, where the team became an established youth hockey team over the course of three movies. Instead of remaking the series outright, Disney will be taking the franchise in a new direction with possibly, a new cast of characters. No casting announcements have been made by Disney, so the possibility of seeing Emilio Estevez’s Gordon Bombay or Joshua Jackson’s Charlie Conway is unknown.

Disney has produced a Mighty Ducks television series in the past, when they went with animated anthropomorphic ducks in another galaxy playing the sport of hockey. The show was as about as 90s as you’d expect.

Disney’s movies, however, shaped a major part of NHL history, as the Anaheim Ducks were originally founded by The Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993. Disney has since sold the franchise and the name has been changed, but the Ducks still pay homage to that part of their history in the years since their inception.

Disney+ as a streaming service will launch on Nov. 12 in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands, but it will be awhile before The Mighty Ducks television series sees light on the platform.
