LSU just clinched a College Football Playoff berth with Alabama win
With a win against Alabama, you can pencil in LSU for the College Football Playoff.
It’s not official until it’s official but LSU fans can pop the bottles and celebrate because they just made the College Football Playoff with their win over Alabama. The Game of the Century looked like it was going to be a blowout with LSU taking a 20-point lead into halftime but Alabama mounted a serious second-half comeback, but it fell just short as LSU held on for a 46-41 win to clinch a spot in the playoff.
This was the toughest test remaining for LSU who has already gotten past Florida, Texas and Auburn and should move up to the No. 1 spot in the playoff rankings on Tuesday evening after their strong showing against No. 3 Alabama.
LSU has the strongest resume with their number of quality wins and none are bigger than Saturday’s win at Bryant-Denny Stadium where they silenced the Alabama faithful with one Joe Burrow completion after another.
Ed Orgeron’s Tigers got their biggest win in the last eight years, snapping their eight-game losing streak to Alabama and in the process clinched their spot and could have eliminated Alabama in the process.
While LSU has a number of quality wins, Alabama doesn’t have a single one. And they won’t get a chance to boost their resume in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia. They won’t get lucky and sneak in again like they’ve done in the past this time around. It’s over for Alabama but the party is just getting started for LSU.
All that’s left is whether LSU will be the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff rankings or if Ohio State will hold onto it after their game with Penn State on Nov. 23. They’ll prefer not to play reigning national champion Clemson if they are the No. 4 seed, but they way they’ve played all year and with the confidence of beating Alabama, LSU will be confident they can beat anyone.
The only thing that can slow LSU is an injury to Burrow because he’s the best player in the nation and the Tigers are unstoppable with him behind center.
