Joe Burrow dominated Alabama and out-shined Tua Tagovailoa to take a stranglehold of the Heisman Trophy race and cement himself atop the Week 11 rankings.

Joe Burrow has been leading the Heisman Trophy race for quite some time, in addition to topping these rankings. The argument could be made that the LSU Tigers quarterback had been tested more than any of the other top candidates for the most prestigious individual award in college football, shining in wins over Texas, Florida and Auburn. However, everything was leading up to the Week 11 showdown with Alabama and Tua Tagovailoa.

With LSU heading on the road to Tuscaloosa to face Nick Saban and an Alabama team that had topped the Tigers in eight consecutive meetings, this was Burrow’s white whale. Not only would a great performance and a win erase the recent history but would also show him besting one of his biggest challengers in Tagovailoa.

And as he’s done all season, Burrow passed the test. Delivering yet another phenomenal performance, the second-year starter for the Tigers led LSU to a 46-41 victory over rival Alabama, cementing both the College Football Playoff destiny of his team and his place atop the Heisman rankings. At this point, it would take a dramatic and unthinkable fall from grace for Burrow to not be delivering an acceptance speech come Dec. 14.

Burrow, however, wasn’t the only Heisman Trophy storyline of the week as Chase Young, who came in at No. 4 in the rankings last week, was sidelined due to an NCAA eligibility issue. Reports say that the Ohio State defensive end could be out for four games. Given how difficult it is for a defensive player to be considered in the first place, Young missing time all but eliminates him from this race.

It’s also worth noting that Minnesota’s win over Penn State caused me to seriously look at the Golden Gophers for a potential candidate. The truth is, though, P.J. Fleck’s offense is potent but largely because they have so many guys that they utilize. Thus, there is no standout Heisman candidate to put into the mix.

Taking all of this into consideration, let’s once again dive into the top 10 Heisman Trophy rankings, seeing how the race is stacking up after 11 weeks of the 2019 college football season.
