2. Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

Jalen Hurts and the Oklahoma Sooners seemingly took their foot off the gas on Saturday night against Iowa State, allowing the Cyclones to mount a huge comeback and have a two-point conversion attempt to win it. OU prevailed by stopping that attempt and, to be sure, Hurts had another big night, finishing with 273 yards passing, three touchdowns and an interception along with 68 rushing yards and two more scores.

Having said that, the late-game hiccups and the clear nicks in the armor that we’re seeing with Hurts and the Sooners right now further the chasm between the quarterback and the top spot in these rankings. Yes, he has 24 passing touchdowns, 15 rushing touchdowns and over 3,600 yards of total offense. However, he’s not been as dominant for 60 minutes as someone like our clear No. 1 in this race.

1. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

At this point, it’s nearly impossible to imagine a world where Joe Burrow isn’t posing with the Heisman Trophy in December. He’s faced one of the most difficult schedules in college football and has done nothing but pass one test after another. But leading LSU to victory over Alabama and largely putting the team on his back was his magnum opus for the 2019 season.

Burrow went 31-of-39 for 393 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions (though he lost a fumble) while rushing for 64 yards as well. For the season now, he has 3,198 yards passing with 33 touchdowns and only four interceptions to go along with three touchdowns. He’s been the unbridled breakout star of this season and has only raised the bar with each performance in the spotlight. Now, there’s no catching him.
