Jared Goff is basically stealing money from the Rams
If the Los Angeles Rams are turn their season around and make the playoffs, they need Jared Goff to improve significantly.
It isn’t a stretch to say Jared Goff has been the NFL’s most disappointing quarterback this season.
After signing a contract with the most guaranteed money in NFL history, Goff has been a disaster. Somehow, he’s taken several steps back from his breakout, star-making season under Sean McVay in 2018, leading to jokes that the Los Angeles Rams loss to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl “broke” Goff and the offense.
If that’s the case, then Goff is the only one who can fix what ails the Rams, because he is indeed the reason for their issues.
The Rams lost 17-12 to Mason Rudolph and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Goff threw two interceptions, including the game-sealing pick to star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and had a whopping 13 passes defended by the Pittsburgh defense.
There can be no excuses for Goff either. He has a head coach lauded for his offensive genius, having successfully helped Kirk Cousins earn a similar payday by engineering a high-powered offense around his limitations. Goff has even more weapons than Cousins did, too. Even with Brandin Cooks injured, he still benefits from Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Josh Reynolds, Todd Gurley and Gerald Everett as starters.
Yet Goff is his own worst enemy, and he might be the Rams worst enemy right now. Getting outdueled by Rudolph is an embarrassment, and Goff will have to be accountable for the head-scratching throws he attempted in the Week 10 loss.
Coming into this game, Goff had the 10th-lowest quarterback rating among qualifiers this season, and he’s only had two games with a QB Rating over 100. One of those games came last week against the Cincinnati Bengals, who are the favorites to “win” the No. 1 overall pick.
Worse yet, Goff’s accuracy and decision-making are beyond inconsistent, so even McVay’s scheming can’t protect the Cal product from himself. Goff was already lead the league in the percentage of throws deemed “poor,” and his numbers can only look worse after this latest debacle in Pittsburgh.
The Rams still have a talented defense, copious weapons on offense, and one of the league’s best coaching staffs. But Goff has been exposed as a limited quarterback with shaky accuracy and developing judgment under center – not having the NFL’s best offensive line anymore has exacerbated these issues.
In the competitive NFC, specifically the NFC West, the Rams have almost no margin for error at 5-4 now. Goff has to work with the coaching staff to resolve his issues quickly, because another performance like this could sink the Rams playoff hopes.
