CM Punk is back as a part of WWE Backstage on FS1

The WWE Universe just got a huge surprise. Former superstar CM Punk will be a special guest host on WWE Backstage.

Cue the CM Punk chants. For years that’s been the case, and finally, the call has been answered. In a move that literally no one saw coming, CM Punk is back in WWE, sort of. Punk will be a special guest on WWE Backstage along with Renee Young, Booker T, and Paige. Punk even shocked Paige live on set. When his music hit she was convinced it was a joke.

This is exciting for wrestling fans everywhere, albeit let’s all rejoice with caution. This does not mean CM Punk is returning to a WWE ring. There were rumors of Punk auditioning for a role with WWE Backstage months ago. Punk would go on to confirm those rumors as true. But he also cited that he had no interest working directly with WWE, though he was open to FOX.

“My agents just called me and FOX is throwing everything at this because they spent a lot of money on this and they’re all in to make it work,” he said. “Originally I thought it was a WWE thing, so I was just like, ‘Meh, no.’ But then they said, ‘This is Fox.'” he said via Collider Live 

Originally Punk hadn’t heard back from the audition. Now we know this could have been a calculated plan all along. Nabbing Punk is a huge win for FOX, who we see is willing to do anything to make the WWE partnership work. Ratings will undoubtedly be through the roof on next week’s episode of Backstage.

This is a small win for WWE fans who want to relive Punk’s wrestling days. Backstage has done a great job in making the show feel like NFL Primetime or NBA on TNT. Seeing Punk break down current storylines and action will also allow fans to see he’s paying attention to the current product. Patience and baby steps, WWE Universe.

Punk has been adamant about never stepping into a ring again, and that’s easy to believe at this point. But in his words on his Backstage appearance, “It’s as simple as this, just when they think they’ve got the answers, I change the culture.”

Consider the culture changed. Buckle up WWE Universe, it’s going to be a fun ride.
