Defenseman T.J. Brodie was stretchered off the ice in Calgary after experiencing an episode and collapsing during a Flames’ practice on Thursday.
Calgary Flames’ defenseman T.J. Brodie had to be stretchered off the ice during a practice on Thursday after collapsing due to an episode. According to multiple reporters at the Flames’ practice at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Brodie suddenly collapsed onto the ice and was convulsing with seizure-like symptoms.
No official diagnosis was given on what caused Brodie, 29, to collapse, but the defenseman was responsive and alert with the ambulance crew and fire department that assisted him off the ice. Brodie was taken to a local hospital by an ambulance after the incident.
Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving stated after practice to the media that Brodie was set to be evaluated at the hospital after the episode.
The Flames cancelled the rest of their practice after Brodie was safely taken to the hospital, with the team visually shaken up by what had transpired on the ice.
This season, the Flames are fourth in the Pacific Division with a 10-8-3 record and 23 total points, which has them tied with the Vancouver Canucks, though Calgary has played two more games. Brodie has played in all 21 of Calgary’s games this season and has no goals and eight assists during that time period.
The Flames are scheduled to take the ice for their next game on Saturday against the Arizona Coyotes. No word has been given if Brodie will be available for the game, but given the severity of the incident at practice the defenseman will likely sit out on playing for a little bit to make sure he’s good to go and that there are no lingering effects on him.
In his nine-year NHL career, Brodie has 255 points in 591 games for the Flames.
