NFL DFS Monday night football: FanDuel single game contest preview
By Hans Geevers
Monday Night Football presents football fans with a divisional matchup between AFC East teams. Let’s take a look at this FanDuel single game slate from a fantasy football perspective!
Before I discuss my FanDuel player picks, let’s look at the key DFS injuries for this football game, briefly review the rules for the FanDuel single game contest, and discuss my fantasy strategy for Monday night’s game.
Key DFS injuries: Kansas City Chiefs: Questionable: Damien Williams-RB. Los Angeles Chargers: Doubtful: Geremy Davis-WR, Justin Jackson-RB.
Now let’s briefly discuss the rules for the FanDuel single game contest. You have $60,000 to utilize on five players from the Monday night’s game. However, one of those players will be designated as your MVP.
The FanDuel MVP accumulates 1.5 times the standard FanDuel points value than your remaining players. Having stated that, it is highly important that you select the correct player for your MVP position if you hope to take down a FanDuel single game contest.
If you have additional questions regarding the rules for this contest, I recommend that you check out the FanDuel website for more details.
Let’s now take a look at my DFS strategy for this AFC contest. NFL fans should be very entertained on Monday night as this game should be a high scoring football game.
The Kansas City Chiefs are a team that has the potential to score a high number of points against any team in the NFL on any given night. Why? Quite simply, because of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Should I roll with Mahomes as my FanDuel MVP this week due to his potential to light up the Chargers defense? You certainly could make an argument that I should. However, what I did not mention when I discussed the Chiefs earlier was the team’s defense.
Well, the Chiefs defense is bad. More specifically, the Chiefs rush defense is just awful. How awful you ask? Well, Kansas City currently ranks dead last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed to opposing offenses. Keep in mind that the NFL has 32 teams. Goodness that is a bad rush defense that the Chargers will face on Monday.
It also has to be said that the Chiefs allowed the Titans Derek Henry to rush for 188 yards in the team’s last football game.
Now that I have outlined in detail just how bad the Chiefs defense is, I think it’s a perfect time to transition to my FanDuel player selections.
MVP-Melvin Gordon $14,000
Yes, I know that many will decide to go with Mahomes as the MVP for this single game slate. For me, I am going to pivot to Melvin Gordon as my MVP.
I think Gordon can perform at a very high level on Monday night and be the perfect MVP for your FanDuel lineup.
Gordon has looked very good lately from a fantasy perspective. In his last two games Gordon has 188 rushing yards and has added 54 receiving yards. More importantly, the man has 47 offensive touches in that two game span.
In my opinion, Gordon will be the focal of the Chargers offense on Monday. I think he has the potential for over 150 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns in this game.
Flex Plays
Patrick Mahomes $16,500
Although, I am not playing him in my MVP slot there is no way I am full fading this man. Mahomes returned to the starting lineup last week and played outstanding.
In last week’s game versus the Titans, Mahomes compiled 446 yards passing. He also added three passing touchdowns.
Tyreek Hill $15,500
Hill is clearly one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL. I fully expect that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will target Hill early and often in Monday night’s game in Mexico City.
Let me provide some clear data to support my previous statement regarding Hill. Over his last three games, Hill has been targeted 37 times by Chiefs quarterbacks. Additionally, Tyreek has 23 receptions and 373 receiving yards.
Keenan Allen $10,500
Phillip Rivers always seems to find a way to get the ball in the direction of Keenan Allen. The statistics clearly indicate that on a consistent basis.
Over his last three games, Allen has been targeted 25 times. In that three game span, Allen has 18 receptions and 161 yards receiving.
LeSean McCoy $8,000
Yes, I know that McCoy is in the latter stage of his career. However, I also know that starting running back Damien Williams is questionable for Monday’s game. If Williams is indeed out, McCoy becomes a decent value play in this single game contest at a FanDuel salary of only $8,000.
