2019 NFL power rankings, Week 13: Jets soar, Eagles grounded
Recap: The Raiders hoped to make it four consecutive wins as they traveled east to face the New York Jets. Rookie running back Josh Jacobs has had a dynamite debut season for Jon Gruden’s team. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the game, Oakland was done for the afternoon in terms of scoring as the club gave up 34 unanswered points 401 total yards by the end of the afternoon. Gruden would eventually pull quarterback Derek Carr in favor of Mike Glennon but the duo combined for only 147 yards through the air and each were guilty of a turnover. And the Jets’ defense limited promising Raiders’ rookie running back Josh Jacobs to 34 yards rushing.
Next Week: The Silver and Black heads east to Arrowhead Stadium for the second meeting of ’19 with the rival Chiefs. Back in Week 2 at Oakland, Gruden’s team opened up a 10-0 lead in the first quarter only to watch Kansas City respond with 28 unanswered points. It was the Raiders’ 11th loss in their last 13 meetings in this rivalry.
Playoff hopes: It proved to be a lost Sunday in New Jersey as the Raiders fell a full game behind the Chiefs in the division and will now head to Arrowhead Stadium this upcoming Sunday. The lopsided setback dropped Oakland’s win-loss in the AFC to 4-3 and the team right into the crazy mix that is the conference’s postseason picture.
Recap: The Titans returned to action after an off week and hosted the Jacksonville Jaguars. Back in Week 3, then-starting quarterback Marcus Mariota was sacked 9 times in a 20-7 Thursday night loss. Running back Derrick Henry once again had a huge outing against the Jacksonville defense thanks for 159 yards and a pair of scores on 19 carries. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw for 259 yards and two scores and also ran for 40 yards and two touchdowns. The Tennessee defense sacked Jaguars’ quarterback Nick Foles three times and Mike Vrabel’s club would own a 35-3 third-quarter lead. The Titans have scored a combined 77 points in their last two outings.
Next Week: Vrabel’s club faces an AFC South rival for a second consecutive week as Tennessee travels north to face the Colts. The Titans have dropped three straight in this series (including a 19-17 loss in Week 2 at Nashville) and own a 2-14 mark in the last 16 clashes between the teams dating back to the clubs’ second meeting in 2011.
Playoff hopes: The Titans, Steelers, Colts and Raiders all own 6-5 records and there’s five weeks remaining in the regular season. But Vrabel’s club is also very much in contention for the AFC South title with two games remaining vs. first-place Houston. This remains one of the more difficult teams to figure out but they are in the playoff mix.
