College basketball power rankings: Duke stays at No. 1, Florida rebounds
11. Texas Tech
Jahmi’us Ramsey is already making a huge impact on Texas Tech as a freshman, averaging 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He had a huge game against LIU Brooklyn on Sunday night as the Red Raiders cruised to a 30-point victory behind his 27 points. If he continues to play as well as he has, Texas Tech should be able to give Kansas a run for the Big 12.
12. Kentucky
Kentucky didn’t lose this week, but they certainly didn’t look great in their games against Utah Valley and Mount St. Mary’s. In fact, the Wildcats only led Mount St. Mary’s by five at halftime and only defeated Utah Valley by eight. That said, they seemed to get back on track on Sunday night when Tyrese Maxey scored 21 and the Wildcats coasted to an 81-56 victory over Lamar. There is no doubt Maxey is one of the better players in the country, but Kentucky needs to mesh better in order to get back to the top.
13. Seton Hall
Seton Hall’s lone blemish this season is a close loss to Michigan State in the Gavitt Games. Despite that loss, the Pirates have rolled to a 4-1 record with huge victories over both Saint Louis and Florida A&M this week. Myles Powell, a senior, is carrying the Pirates with 23 and 26 points in his past two outings and is averaging 22 points per game. As long as Powell can continue to put up numbers like that, Seton Hall will be real contenders this season.
14. Memphis
James Wiseman is serving his suspension that’ll keep him out until January, and while that is a gargantuan loss, the Tigers still have plenty of talent. Precious Achiuwa was the other five-star that came with Wiseman and he had a 25-point scoring outing in a victory over Ole Miss. D.J. Jeffries is also making an impact on Memphis as he had 23 against the Rebels. So while it will be tough to overcome the loss of Wiseman, the Tigers still have the pieces to make it work.
15. Utah State
Utah State is going to be that team that by tournament time, your average basketball team won’t know, but the hardcore followers will know they are a legit Final Four team. With three more wins this week, including one against LSU, the Aggies are off to a 7-0 start. The team continues to be led by Sam Merrill who was their leading scorer a season ago and is averaging 18.5 points per game this season after averaging 21 last year.
