9. Trevor Lawrence and Clemson got on the right track

There’s a viable argument to be made that no player in college football was more celebrated entering the 2019 season that Clemson’s true sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence. After leading Dabo Swinney’s team to a National Championship Game rout last season, he was being anointed as the next great quarterback and all eyes were going to be on him. Then something funny happened.

Lawrence was objectively not very good to start the 2019 season. He was turning the ball over, not making many plays with his arm and seemingly looked like a shell of the star that we saw hit the ground running and take the job away from Kelly Bryant the year before. And everyone began to wonder if the hype had gotten to the quarterback and, in turn, Clemson — particularly as they almost lost to North Carolina.

Thankfully, it was nothing more than a brief sophomore skid for Lawrence as he and the Tigers have flipped the switch since almost getting upset by the heels. In the weeks since the end of September, though it seems as if fewer people have taken notice, the quarterback has been one of the most impressive players in the country. And he’s been leading the charge for a downright dominant team.

It’s always a treat for fans to witness greatness on the field in college and it did feel as if we were in danger of not getting to see that with how Lawrence performed early in the season. We should be thankful that was not the case and that he indeed looks like the superstar we all pegged him to be.
