1. Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals haven’t just owned the NHL’s best record for a majority of the 2019-20 campaign, but the 2018 Stanley Cup champions also wear the league’s best alternate jersey for this season.
This patriotic sweater proudly represents Washington D.C. and the United States, and fans sadly had to experience losing something great before truly appreciating this decorative hockey sweater.
This third jersey is a modern version of the team’s original red sweater from the team’s inception back in 1974-75. The design was retired after the 1994-95 season and in favor for a new color scheme and the “soaring eagle” logo. Of course, the Capitals also fell into the trap of introducing a black third jersey and at a time when it didn’t necessarily stay consistent with Washington’s brand.
However, the team brought back the white version of this sweater for the 2010 Winter Classic and it was utilized as a third jersey up until 2015 when it was then traded in for the current alternate.
The layout and design of this jersey have a traditional appearance with its bright colors, the solid white shoulder yokes and the white and blue stripes on the base of the jersey. What’s interesting is how the blue and white stars are incorporated on the sleeves of the jersey.
Teams typically don’t use logos or shapes such as stars to run down the sides of a jersey’s sleeves, but if one team were able to pull off the style – it’s Washington.
This jersey is flashy, but its vintage aspects make for the perfect combination for a modern and throwback styled jersey. The pants that the Capitals wear with the jersey can’t be overlooked either, right?
You heard it here first – the Washington Capitals own the best alternate jersey in the NHL for the 2019-20 season.
