2019 NFL power rankings, Week 14: Bengals prevail, Colts collapse
Recap: Doug Marrone’s team was in quite the slump when it hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. The Jaguars had dropped consecutive games to the Texans, Colts and Titans, respectively, by a combined score of 101-36. The team had also dropped each of those contests by at least 20 points. And the home club found itself down 25-0 after 30 minutes due in large to three turnovers by quarterback Nick Foles, one of those a fumble returned for a touchdown. He was benched in place of rookie Gardner Minshew, who provided a brief spark. But the duo was sacked a combined five times and each threw an interception on a four-turnover day for Marrone’s team.
Next Week: The Jaguars host the Los Angeles Chargers for the second time in three years as these clubs square off for the sixth time in seven seasons dating back to 2013. Two seasons ago, Marrone’s team came away with a wild 20-17 overtime win over Anthony Lynn’s squad. Jacksonville owns a 3-7 lifetime record in this short-lived setting.
Playoff hopes: The good news for Marrone and company was the fact that the club didn’t lose by at least 20 points. But the Jaguars had to be disappointed by the play of Foles and their defensive unit in general. Minshew came in and had some moments and it wouldn’t be a shock if the rookie signal-caller remains in the lineup.
Recap: Kliff Kingsbury’s team was back on the field after some time off and a Cardinals’ loss to the visiting Rams would eliminate Arizona from the postseason picture. And it didn’t take long for the team to realize it was in for a long afternoon against a club they had dropped four consecutive games to entering Sunday. The club was simply embarrassed in the first half, outscored 20-0 and outgained in total yards, 390-63. When it was all said and done, Kingsbury’s squad was completely overwhelmed as the Cardinals allowed 549 total yards. Meanwhile, Kyler Murray ran for the team’s only touchdown but was sacked six times and had an interception returned for a score.
Next Week: Big Red hosts the Black and Gold for the first time since 2011 as the Cards take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dating back to the teams’ memorable Super Bowl LIII clash in Tampa, Arizona has dropped three straight in this interconference series. The Cardinals’ last home game in this setting resulted in a 32-20 loss in 2011.
Draft Talk: In 2015, the Cardinals set a franchise record for wins in a season (13) and were within one victory of reaching another Super Bowl. But the club hasn’t been back to the playoffs since and were eliminated on Sunday. General manager Steve Keim added Murray and a few other pieces in ’19 but the rebuilding will certainly continue.
