2. Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

The one game that you would expect the Oklahoma Sooners to be playing in a close one, in Stillwater for the Bedlam rivalry against Oklahoma State, Jalen Hurts and Lincoln Riley’s group made a statement with a big win. But for one of the few times this season, the quarterback was not the star of the show for the OU offense as Kennedy Brooks went off.

Make no mistake, though — Hurts was still quite good as he went 13-of-16 for 163 yards and a touchdown and added 61 rushing yards and a rushing score. In his lone season with the Sooners, Hurts has now accounted for 49 touchdowns (31 passing, 18 rushing) and has over 4,500 yards of total offense on the season. Even if he’s fallen well behind No. 1, Hurts is the runner-up at this point of the race.

1. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

Not that there is any doubt whether or not Joe Burrow is going to be hoisting the Heisman Trophy on Dec. 14 but the LSU quarterback made sure he left no questions in the regular-season finale. Up against rival Texas A&M, the Tigers star — who sported a fantastic “Burreaux” jersey for senior night in Baton Rouge — Burrow shined with a phenomenal performance, just another to his credit this season.

Burrow got revenge for the seven-overtime loss a year ago as he went 23-of-32 for 352 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions on the day as he led the charge for a 50-7 victory. The LSU signal-caller now has 4,366 yards passing while completing 78.3 percent of his throws and tossing 44 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

He’s been the best player in college football from start to finish and has locked up the award beyond a shadow of a doubt.
